Carbonless paper (also called NCR paper — No Carbon Required) uses micro-encapsulated dye on the back of each sheet and a reactive clay coating on the front of the next sheet. When pressure is applied (writing or impact printing), the microcapsules burst, transferring color to the lower sheets.
