Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon (wax, wax-resin, or resin) to print, which makes them far more durable — they resist fading, heat, and chemicals for years. Direct thermal labels darken when heated and are best for short-term use (e.g., shipping labels). For long-term asset tracking or harsh environments, choose thermal transfer.
