Direct thermal labels contain a heat-sensitive coating that darkens when exposed to the thermal printhead — no ribbon needed. This makes them ideal for short-to-medium-term applications like shipping labels, retail tags, and receipts. Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon and are more durable for long-term or outdoor use.
